COSMETOLOGY 1 at HVBA in Saline

Requirements: Grades 11-12 only, Application Required, Full Year Program, Entire Program is 2 Years + 1 Summer

Cosmetology is a two-year, adult-level program for students who have made a serious commitment to become a professional Cosmetologist. A mandatory summer program is held in the summer between Cos I and Cos II. The State-approved Cosmetology program prepares a student for employment in one of our nation's largest personal service industries, with the entry-level skills needed for employment in the beauty trades. Upon completion of 1500 hours of combined theory and clinical instruction, the student will be qualified to take the Michigan State Board of Cosmetology exam. Students must pay a $15 State registration fee, purchase uniforms, and arrange their own transportation to the off-campus (Saline) location. Classwork includes the following areas of study: personal hygiene, communication, sanitation, bacteriology, laws and rules, hair cutting, hair styling, artificial hair, hair coloring, chemical reconstruction, manicuring, facials, makeup, hair removal, and applied anatomy, physiology, and chemistry as related to skin, hair, and nails. Spots are limited. (Seniors who register for Cos I must be willing to commit to a year beyond graduation to complete the program. Additional fees will apply.)

COSMETOLOGY 2 at HVBA in Saline

Requirements: Grade 12 only, Application Required, Full Year Program, Entire Program is 2 Years + 1 Summer, Successful Completion of Cosmetology 1

The second year of Cosmetology is a continuation of the coursework learned in Cos I, with an emphasis on practical, hands-on skills, including working on clients in the student salon. Additional class work includes applied anatomy, physiology, and histology of the human head, hands, nails, and skin, applied chemistry as related to skin, hair, and nails, and salon management and employability skills. A final project includes a digital portfolio and resume. Students will be prepared to take the State licensing exam at the completion of 1500 clock hours. Registering for the exam and all associated fees are the student’s responsibility. Students who successfully become licensed cosmetologists may receive articulated credit with Washtenaw Community College, Baker College, Davenport University, Mott Community College, and Ferris State University.
